In Germany and the EU, the quality of the drinking water is regulated by the Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV).
In order to avoid confusion and possible health hazards, water taps which are not connected to the public water network - such historic wells or springs - specially marked with a sign saying "No drinking water" or equivalent.
